WALLER — The 2022 Waller Bulldog football campaign begins this week after two rounds of scrimmages.
Having been reclassified into Conference 6A during the UIL’s biennial redistricting process earlier this year, the Bulldogs have three varsity games on Saturdays — namely against Klein ISD teams. Klein has five high schools vying for the same kickoff times at Klein Memorial Stadium.
The Bulldogs have three non-district games this season.
The season begins this Friday, Aug. 26, at Bryan High School’s Merrill Green Stadium, 3450 Campus Dr, Bryan, TX 77802. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
Week 2 has Waller’s home opener is scheduled for Sept. 2 at Waller ISD Stadium, as the Bulldogs host Katy’s Mayde Creek Rams with a 7 p.m. kickoff. The local Pee Wee football league is on tap for recognition.
Week 3 sees Waller hosting Montgomery’s Lake Creek Lions, with kickoff at 7 p.m. Sept. 9. The community is set to recognize area first responders, and build awareness of childhood cancer.
Week 4 is the Bulldogs’ mandatory off, or bye, week. The common thinking is to the best week to take the bye week is right before district play begins. That’s exactly how Waller’s schedule is set, as District 15-6A action begins the following week.
League action is where games really count. While the top four teams from each district advance to the playoffs, conventional thinking says that Waller may have a tough road ahead as the Bulldogs are punching up from Class 5A against teams, which have been in the state’s big school conference for a while now.
Additionally, with the move to Conference 6A, the “Division I” and “Division II” are no longer predetermined. However, the Bulldogs are the smallest school in District 15-6A, so they will go the Division II route, in all playoff scenarios.
Week 5 is the Bulldogs’ first Saturday game, scheduled for 6 p.m. at Klein Memorial Stadium, against Klein Forest, Sept. 24.
Waller returns home against Klein Collins for Week 6. Kickoff is at 7 p.m., Sept. 30, with coaches recognition as the game’s flavor.
Week 7 has Waller visiting Tomball ISD Stadium, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. to battle Tomball High School.
Week 8, Waller returns home to host Klein High School, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. for Homecoming, with “Pink out” breast cancer awareness, and Coach to Cure Muscular Dystrophy.
Week 9 is the first of two straight weeks at Klein Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs will battle Klein Oak on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 2 p.m.
Week 10 has Klein Cain hosting Waller on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 2 p.m.
The regular season finale in Week 11 has the Bulldogs hosting Tomball Memorial at 7 p.m. for Senior Night.
Entrance into the state playoffs isn’t guaranteed. But the top half of District 15-6A will move into the postseason.
Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine, which uses information submitted by coaches from across the state, has predicted District 15-6A to play out like this:
1. Klein Collins, 2. Klein Cain, 3. Klein Oak, 4. Tomball, 5. Klein, 6. Klein Forest, 7. Tomball Memorial, 8. Waller.
The playoffs are single-elimination brackets over six weeks, culminating at the AT&T Stadium, near Dallas, in Arlington. Class 6A title games will be on Saturday, Dec. 17.
